This has been my motto for a lot of years, so it was with great pleasure that I ran across this quote from CS Lewis:
“I think this wise; the greatest service we can do to education is to teach fewer subjects. No one has time to do more than a very few things well before he is twenty, and when we force a boy to be a mediocrity in a dozen subjects we destroy his standards, perhaps for life”
What a great reminder that we don’t have to be great at everything…and we can let some things go. Sorry that your week hasn’t been the greatest. Hang in there!
This is what I am focusing on as well. There are so many wonderful ideas that people have put together and shared with us homeschoolers, but I need simple and most important to be my focus.
This really resounded with me! I’m so glad you shared it.
I always struggled with Charlotte Mason’s short, but numerous, lessons. It seemed my children never had the chance to truly plough into a subject and excel. I was constantly calling them back, urging them on to something else – day after day. I eventually gave up by their early teens because I finally understood fewer subjects taught well was more important that ticking numerous boxes. Not sure if that makes sense, but I appreciate the vote of confidence C S Lewis’s quote just gave me.
