Bermuda Triangle?

Murphy’s Law?

Tell you what, it’s something. We could call this the summer of The Great Appliance Meltdown. Let’s see. I told you about the stove. The dishwasher. The microwave came before those. The van has been jumped on multiple occasions. Well this weekend the water heater started sputtering as we were leaving for church. After investigating, Allen discovered the propane tank was empty. That was sort of good bad news because it meant it wasn’t the boiler but the gas that was faulty. Somehow we fell through a crack in the summer delivery route and ran dry. That meant however that we are down to the “extra” (read ratty) fridge and cold water at the moment. Let me just say washing dishes by hand was more delightful with hot water. So were showers.

We are working hard to maintain our sense of humor. Some days we are more successful than others. I have one other motto which is that this is not a bad way to suffer. You have to be careful who you share mottoes like those with however or you run out of people to whine to. They tend to do things like repeat your mottoes back to you. Darn. Truly though as Christians we know we are to take up a cross. In the whole big picture these are itty bitty crosses compared to chemotherapy, car accidents, nuclear war, or POW camp. Granted they are itty bitty like an angry hornet at times – small but packing a punch.

So, it is that. Wish me well and I will be back to you soon if I promised a response or answer to a question. Aside from the aforementioned little disasters we had cabinets for Allen to repair and are refinishing a desk. Oh and that trim. While I may wish for summer to linger longer, time waits for no man so we toil while the sun shines here and hope for the best.

A picture thought for Monday – Alannah by the ocean, with no appliances in sight….

  1. Oh dear. My parents had a summer of endless broken appliances when I was a kid and my brother and I topped it by his getting a huge rope burn on his thigh (he ended up on bottom of a tug-o-war pile and they just pulled the rope and my brother’s skin out of it…ooops) and I broke both my arms at once flipping off monkey bars. So, if you can keep it to appliances, that would be good. You seem to be maintaining your sense of humor just fine. I hope you’ve seen the worst of it and the rest of your summer is nothing but peaceful and productive.

  2. Oh,Kim,
I’m so sorry! Sometimes it’s those little unglamorous crosses of mortification that needle us the most! I’ll keep you all in my prayers today. 🙂

  3. After the rain, the sun. So hang on girl, you will end up with lovely new appliances and a full propane tank! We did a similar thing last fall, had to replace nearly every single appliance in the place. I wish for you lots of hot water and a new dishwasher! We used to wonder why there was never a “kitchen fairy” in all our reading. The closest we got was the “Pooka” from Tommie de Paola, and we never saw a Pooka around here! 🙂 We sorely wanted one when the dishwasher and stove and microwave were all on the fritz at the same time!

  4. I thought it was only our family that was having the appliance meltdown this year. It all started last November. The six year old double ovens burned out for Thanksgiving, finally replaced by Christmas. Then the hot water heater and one car battery on Christmas day with guests here, then two cars’ batteries in Feb. Followed by the airconditioning unit (only six years old) to the tune of $11,000 (unit outside and inside plus discovered improper installation of vents etc.)during Easter week cancelled dinner here for Easter. The Laser color printer froze one day when lighting struck nearby and it was running. In June the Maytag washing machine digital thing burned out (under warranty for this one thing) and this week we had to buy a new dishwasher. In 40 years of marriage I never have had that many appliances burn out! Oh, yes the added insult was our fourth car battery went while shopping for the dishwasher.
We live near the ocean and salt does a lot of damage to the cars and outside of the house but all at once??? I’m feeling pessimestic–I think the possibility this year of a hurricane and a roof or pool damage would be the straw that breaks the camels back. We’re retired.

  5. It’s an epidemic! For us it was cars, then the fridge (that was a bad one) and now the dishwasher is getting ready to go out (ever since I made some comment about not really minding washing dishes by hand. What WAS I thinking?!) God bless you guys! What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger, right? It’ll be alright in the end; if it’s not alright, it’s not the end… It’s always darkest before the dawn…. &:o)
