LA's Chinatown was a must see for me. It is smaller than San Francisco of course but definitely full of color and culture.

Red and blue and yellow pretty much make my heart sing.
Yes, we did have to have a discussion about what that machine was. "What is that over there? Is that like a… is that a phone?? On the street? What for?"

So glad the children were able to see this place.

Regarding the payphone, bless, was just reading aloud to my teens today from the newspaper about the local public schools (some of them) instituting a ban on cell phones//internet acess during school hours … the middle school kids are concerned about how to stay in touch with their parents if need be and the principal tried to explain that there’s a land line in every classroom … but the kids didn’t even know what that was. Which makes sense for kids under 13 but still … phew the world has changed fast!!
I never left home without a dime in my pocket when I was a kid. Maybe I was exposed to too much news, but my internal alarms were always set to go off. I often wished there were more public phones available. Very happy to have a cell phone today.
