In praise of raspberry leaf…

Herbs_raspberry …. and other dietary ramblings. ; )

Elizabeth called yesterday to relate the great news of an excellent postpartum checkup. (ck out her blog today for more of their family’s herbal explorations of late).  Her experience prompted me to write about my all time favorite herb – Red Raspberry leaf.  It has been such a friend to me I cannot imagine going through pregnancy and postpartum without it. I am apparently not alone, since it is estimated that 20% of pregnant women now use the herb. Despite that reported number, my personal experience has been that few of my women friends have made extensive use of it.  That is a true pity because I have yet to see it fail to net tremendous results.

Some history here: I had a short, horrifically painful labor with my first son, complete with vomiting and chills. Fortunately I was young and bounced back quickly.  Second son was enormous.  I had become a vegetarian in the interim between these pregnancies and I am not sure if the increase in carbs or just plain old recessive genes came into play but he was 2 and a half lbs heavier and 2 in longer than the first. Recovery went reasonably well but I was torn to pieces during delivery and he was plagued with colic afterwards. My third pregnancy found me riddled with viral infections and generally worn down. I hemorrhaged during delivery and for many many weeks afterwards.  Infections continued and eventually led to a complete physical breakdown. By age 24 my health was shot.

All my research seemed to indicate that an even stricter diet was in order. I became a complete vegan and embarked on an elimination diet to see if some food was triggering the massive problems. I reacted strongly to glutinous grains and corn. (which doesn’t leave one with a whole lot else!) Removing them brought about relief from many symptoms but I had become the Incredible Shrinking Woman. By my 4th pregnancy I was approaching 90 lbs. During this pregnancy I experienced some of my worst preterm contractions and various freakish muscle cramps (in retrospect likely due to the absence of adequate calcium source) I also was determined to try my new trick – Raspberry Leaf. As it turns out, I was induced without access to my herb. Allen brought me tea faithfully in the hospital afterwards however and the effect was near miraculous. If I took the tea, I had no pain or bleeding. If I quit, both kicked up again. By consuming it religiously I had a totally different postpartum experience.

With baby 5 I used the tea during pg and early labor. By the time it was clear that I was truly in labor and arrived at the hospital I was 6cm. Within 90 minutes we had a baby girl. The postpartum team was on alert since I was considered a grand multipara by this time and was "at risk of hemorrhage". Whatever. <g> It never happened. In fact female health, which was the only health I had at that pt, was excellent. Unfortunately my general health was still in decline. I would diagnosed with adult onset asthma within a year.

At this point we abandoned the vegetarian diet and added more protein. Things began to improve. I concieved my 6th child and embarked on Dr Brewer’s diet for pregnancy. No more infections!! I gained a lb a week which concerned me but I was strong enough to see my oldest through grueling neurosurgery in the late first trimester while my husband was out of state for 6 wks of military training. I was also able to tolerate a wider variety of foods that I had previously reacted to. Perhaps it was true – the protein and vitamins were rebuilding my health.  The pregnancy proceeded rather uneventfully. I added Squawvine herb to my delivery arsenal. The result? Labor at home from 1-4am. Arrived at the hospital at 4:40 am having walked from the parking lot to the second floor unit. At 4:50 I was 8cm. At 5:20 we had a big baby boy. Again, no hemorrhage, quick recovery, and this time no infections at all. In fact I felt better than I had in many years.

My health continued to improve in the following months and I became pg with number 7. We had some pressing family challenges during this pg but my health was superb. I again used copious amts of the raspberry and the additional squawvine as delivery neared. I woke up at 1 am at 39 wks with strong contractions. After an hr it appeared as though this may really be labor and I got into the tub to relax for what I expected would be a bit of early labor. My water promptly broke and we did not make it to the hospital. That’s right!  Surprise homebirth at 3am. After the shock wore off I was exhilarated. I felt wonderful and the recovery was as quick as the previous ones.

With Brendan, our last baby, Allen deployed to Iraq. It was by far the most frightening time to be pg – and alone on top of it.  Delivery was complicated by a bit of an odd presentation but nevertheless he was born after 3 hrs of labor. At my postpartum check I surprised the military provider who expected a far different exam of a woman in her late 30’s with this many children.

I had a dear friend locally who was also delivering her 8th child the same month. She also used the raspberry and squawvine for the first time with that baby. This woman, who typically went overdue and had long labors, also delivered her baby before the midwife arrived. Recovery was remarkably speedy. She was convinced!

I am technically full term today – 37 wks! I have followed the Weston Price and Brewer plans this pregnancy and we had only one bout of colds go through the house as fall set in. This time I was unbelievably free from the troublesome preterm contrax that have been a mainstay of my pgs. I attribute this to our goat’s milk as much as the general diet.

I am beginning my increase of raspberry today and will incorporate the squawvine which seems to act as a contraction regulator. The prospect of labor pain is stil intimidating. Probably always will be! But I am encouraged by all this past experience and that of my friends that it will not be insurmountable. I do not generally fear tearing or postpartum hemorrhage barring freak accidents either. The diet and herbs do incredible things for tissue health!

A life of service

Washing_feet I found another lovely blog this week  – A Virtuous Woman. She posted very eloquently about serving our husbands, including one of the most compelling exerpts I have seen from Edith Schaeffer. Lost in the hooha that is generally stirred up when one begins to discuss wifely submission, Ephesians, and ‘headship’ is the idea that we serve less because of Ephesians and more because of Matt 25:35. It is not our husbands who call us to serve, it is Jesus who says, "When I was hungry, you gave me to eat…"

Anyway, I encourage you to consider her post. It’s not about rules, but about the softening of hearts that occurs when we serve as He did – without grumbling or murmuring. (I am working on that part….)  Its not about ‘why must I’ but about ‘why shouldn’t I’. And moreover, about what incredible good comes to us by laying down our lives for another.

Grandma Moses lesson plan

Gr_moses So it’s no secret I don’t follow directions well. ; ) All it takes is for me to say, "I am following such and so’s lesson plan" and whammo, something really falls together in other areas and begs to be followed. And so it went here.

We started Little House in the Big Woods because, hey, we are getting more and more of their life and I figured the kids could really relate now. Well the Dover children’s sampler (not sure if that will pull up for you or not) came in my box today and one of the samples was from an art coloring bk. The sample was Grandma Moses. Never mind that our curriculum has us scheduled for a different artist. (I didn’t like the pics that were scheduled to be honest).  I printed the Grandma Moses pic "just in case".  Then for grins surfed for Grandma Moses stuff. Turns out she was a civil war era figure…..just like the Ingall’s Family.  Hmmm. THAT seems like a providential coincidence. ; )  She also gave birth to ten children. (*I* could relate to that part, though sadly only 5 of hers survived)  Well one thing led to another and suddenly there are links.  So I am sharing them in case any of you are as easily led by serendipity as I.

Got Maps?

Sketch18 If you scrapbook you want some I promise! While reloading bookmarks I stumbled upon Becky Fleck sketches at Two Peas. How did I miss these??? I like some of these even better than the Becky Higgins sketches. And bless her, she has archived years worth of sketches at her website Page Maps. Scoot! Go now! Check them out!  You will thank me! It really is worth all those exclamation points. ; D

Thrift Shopping

Tin_storage The Vintage Homemaker list posted this link today that so much fun I am passing it along to you.  Mrs Catherine’s blog and other simple living sites have posted challenges related to not purchasing anything new for a month. When I read through the *rules* of the challenge it actually meant nothing new outside of food/medical etc. Well shoot, that’s no challenge lol!  Being a dedicated thrift shopper I had come to consider anything I purchased at these establishments to be *new*.  They were new to us anyway!

We do love thrift shopping. For one thing, the prices are awesome and you can find very high end labels for next to nothing. Move over ebay! Someone suggested I try there for Hanna Andersson clothing yesterday so I checked. Yes, in fact you can buy up to 3000 pieces of that designer at the moment. BUT, not for a buck by any stretch. Where else but the thrift store can you get a dryer for less than $50? Or the lovely Blue Willow tea cups we found stashed on a shelf for a dollar a piece? Three ring binders for 75 cents or less? A bread machine for $7?

Our routine has us visit one of a few stores each errand day. Normally if I need something for the home we start there and give it a couple weeks. On the off chance we can’t locate it by then we will hit a chain store. Doesn’t happen that often. If you want to give it a whirl but don’t know where to start check out The Thrift Shopper online magazine. Lots of fun articles and a search vehicle for your area.

I saw the pic on this site as well. Repurposed containers are on my mind lately since I have been slowly reorganizing the pantry. I LOVED the ideas Stacy Julian had on the first round of Clique TV but no way could afford to re-do all my storage with lined baskets. The thrift shop highlighted in the web mag has these coffee tins for storing small items. They used bottle caps to tie on the prices. I thought they would look nice with a scrapbook tag and label printed in a nice font for dry goods.

Stitched Tees

Chick_tee_1  Thought we would upload pics of some relatively quick gifts we made up last week. Once you learn the basic embroidery stitches used in the redwork projects you can transfer them to other media. We needed some baby gifts in a pinch so we took some onesies, printed off names and images from a dingbat font we downloaded from Two Peas, and placed them under the top layer of the tee. We traced the letters and images with a water soluable transfer pen. (it disappears when wetted) then used a simple outline stitch over the tracing. That’s it!

Emma_tee Stitching on the knit fabric is a bit tricky but not overly hard. If I do these again I will buy some fusible web to adhere to the back side of the stitching to protect it during laundering.

When uploading new bookmarks I found that Primrose Design Blog has been uploading stitching lessons complete with not just diagrams but PHOTOS of the stitches as they are worked. They are all listed under Stitch School so scroll down for them all.

The Best Kids Booksite

The Best Kids Book Site is a favorite ‘place’ of mine which I just recovered. Figured since I hadn’t written about it previously I would do that now since there is just so much there. At the main book link you can search for books by genre and by age group. (or by author, awards, series, or any number of other specifications)  The Holidays tab will bring up pages (and pages and pages…) of craft ideas and links for most holidays.  Here is Christmas to get you started.  The Storytimes tab pulls up what amounts to a little theme unit on several topics complete with fingerplays, stories, coloring pages, crafts, songs etc.

There are several blogs that have daily doses of cool things.  The Cast of Characters has a story read daily on the web. The one I listened to was a decent length. About five minutes of listening time. There is a coloring page blog with a different free page to print each day. The Daily Craft blog will keep you in good graces with the pre-K crowd. No creativity needed. Just load it on bloglines and you will have a steady supply of seasonal projects. Finally there is a monthly calendar that pulls the whole shootin’ match together. Here is Nov just for perusal since it is nearly over.

Wait a minute, Mr Postman!

Postman_2 I haven’t sung the "We just got a letter" song all week. Apparently, I can blather on and on for quite some time before it hits me that noone is blathering back. Once it hit me I got a bit paranoid and told Allen, who suggested that perhaps noone was GETTING my mail.  Could it be?  Yes indeed. Although we have incoming mail set up there was a glitch with outgoing.  This means alllllll those notes sent this week went into cyberspace and not into your boxes dear friends! And since I can’t send out I couldn’t tell you I couldn’t send out.

We have a call in to tech support so hopefully the problem will be solved right quick. Meantime please excuse the silence on this end of the inbox. : /

Good Moira Hunting

Moira and Allen went on the second season hunt last week.  We just got the pics uploaded and she was too funny to pass up blogging about. Here she is in the Colorado wilderness first thing in the morning…

M_hunting_1

And here she is a bit later in the day…

M_sleeping  She outlasted the adults though and hiked like a trooper with no complaints. Her Daddy was very proud of her! There were no elk in sight this time but, as expected, she had a very good time just being outside in mountains.
