FOR TODAY Nov. 8, 2010

Outside my window… sunrise and slush.  We had impressive snowfall the past few weeks followed by rain which left things a bit soggy.  The sunrise over the trees has been new and different daily.  It has become a ritual of mine to see what the day brings us in that regard. I am rarely disappointed.

I am hearing… about 50% less than I was last week this time. It's been a rough week. We had a seemingly mild,  but surprisingly hard to shake, virus run through the house.  I honestly didn't feel terribly sick at all comparatively.  (though it is possible my pain perspective is a bit skewed)  Within a couple days my ear filled up, infected, and the eardrum ruptured.  Just. Like. That. At this writing there is still incredible pressure and hearing loss, which I am praying is reversible.  I am sporting a cotton ball, even broke down and am taking medication, and having flashbacks to my 6yo self – post ear tube surgery.  And let me tell you an ear tube would probably provide a good deal of relief at this moment. : /

 Pondering these words…

"I had said to God, 'You know I have no time to be ill.' I was heard beyond my hopes and I boasted of it to myself a little. Then He seemed to answer, 'Since you have no time to be ill perhaps you will have time for much trouble?' And I assure you I have not been spared. You see, in this world it is like that. We must carry the cross in one way or another.  We say to our Lord, 'I don't want that.' Often He hears us but often alas! for our unhappiness. It is better to take patiently what comes to us. There is always joy beside the pain." – Zelie Martin (linked below)

There is always joy beside the pain.

From the learning rooms…   Second quarter is off to a strong start.  I am more confident we will finish strong now that we have a better idea of what to focus upon for the quarter grades and what the school is expecting. It is challenging but the younger the student the easier the transition has been and the quicker they have developed the necessary study skills.

From the kitchen… silly surprises. I was in a foggy viral daze the other day when I started cracking eggs.  I vaguely noticed some marker on the top of the egg in hand and assumed our grafitti artist had been there too. Then happened to look closer at the carton and realized I had been punked.  ; )

Not a bad way to start the day.  They do keep me laughing lol.

I am thankful for…  an opportunity Asher and Alannah had to spend the weekend in Munich with the young people from our tiny chapel.  They have been invited on several occasions but it's too far to drive and drop off and we didn't want Alannah to tackle the train alone.  Asher's arrival made this time possible. Alannah talked by phone with an older German friend who walked us through the ticketing and itinerary.  Another girl, also traveling to the Munich gathering met them at their second to last train change (there were many of them on an 8 hr journey!) and helped navigate the rest of the way.

It was a short but memorable weekend of games and fun and fellowship.

We are so proud of them that they figured it all out and so pleased they are getting to make these connections.

I am wearing… likely boot cut jeans and a sweater. And boots for that slush. And a slouchy hat over my cotton ball'd ear. Does this sound attractive or what lol?  Heading out to shop for Tess' birthday cake supplies in a bit.  I was rereading some of Helen's (Castle of the Immaculate) thoughts about ironing (and generally preparing for church further in advance) here and thought I would share.  I absolutely agree.  It is a small thing that does say alot. Coming from a military home we realize that while appearance is not the most important thing it DOES convey a loud message about our self respect and the respect we wish to show to others.

Around the house…. more little Christmas tea light holders from the thrift shop.  Reorganized the girls wardrobe/closet this wknd.  It was one big laundry basket.  Much better now. They really need a second pole for hangers.

More house inspiration here on Flickr – which seems to be where I hang out online more and more. (Very encouraging, that community is!)  The corners of this home are so soothing and simple and vintage.

I am creating… Christmas gifts which may arrive on time but more than likely not. Here is hoping. I hope to bring some hand sewing on our trip for a change of pace.   Need some inspiration?  Check out these adorable carolers.

I am reading…  Finishing the Story of a Family finally.  It's been years of on and off reading.  At this age and stage of life, and what it has thrown at me,  I can relate to Zelie Martin.  I cannot tell you how she inspires me.

A few plans for the rest of the week…  Bavaria!  Though there will be no Zugspitz for me this year.  There will be castles and snow and a warm house in the mountains however. I'll take it. : )

Tess will kick off her four year old year in the Alps. amazing to me still.

A picture thought I am sharing…

Wiesbaden

How about an urban walk for a change of pace?  I have always preferred urban or rural vs suburban, although we have mostly lived in the latter. Urban isn't exactly practical with nine or ten in the house full time.  Still, it is an exhilarating visit now and then!

I bring you Wiesbaden, Germany, street views……

Weihnachtsmarkt Burg Lichtenberg

Kusel Castle, also known as Burg Lichtenberg, had its weihnachtsmarkt last week.  It was bitterly cold and damp but we were anxious to show Asher his first castle.

The fam had a dinner  and then we explored the grounds.  At one point I heard the cry "Role Play!"  go out. You can guess from whom….

Then they were off disappearing into passageways and hiding behind and atop the walls, whooping and jumping out and laughin with general wild abandon, until we had to call uncle and take the peep-sicles home to thaw.

No camera?  No problem.  Have iphone, will travel!

And travel we do – following these little men up and down hill and vale in search of tiny tupperwares and boxes of hidden treasure.

The geocache iphone app transforms it into a compass/gps coordinate tool to help them navigate through the wilderness to the cache site.  The Hipstamatic app helps me to catch it all. : )

Hope you are outside this weekend!

first snow

We have had our first snow, which was followed in short order by our second and third snows. If it is possible I think the woods are even more beautiful in winter. We have walked and walked though some of us need better boots for this, especially if we are going to keep geocaching. When a girl finds herself scaling the sides of soggy ravines and peering into mineshafts and such like she begins to carefully consider her footwear.

The snow caught the trees off quard, some still clinging to the last few leaves.

The sheep were dressed for the occasion however though they always look surprised to see me don't they?

How was your thanksgiving?  Ours was wonderful even if the food left a bit to be desired. Must work on the food, but the mojo is fleeting.  I would rather be outside.  That is exactly where I was right up until we ate.

I think I am not going to be a chef when I grow up.

a little note

A-little-note-web

….to say I am still here, but not.  Our Asher arrived last Saturday.  We have been laughing and driving and shopping and eating pretty much non-stop since then.

Monday we had a photo shoot for a beautiful baby girl.  Husband rode along to be prop boy since he was off and we made a day of it wandering downtown. Taking more pictures of course.

Yesterday we took a road trip to IKEA and the very nice Mobel Martin store because things were verging on country-with-a-K on the main floor after my attempt at dining room valances and it just wasn't working. A few tweaks later and I think we have settled on a Christmas theme.  I am sure you are terribly relieved for me. <g>

Maybe you would sympathize more with the kids who spent half an hour working out their order at McDonald's… Wow. No English speaking staff and their German didn't cut the mustard apparently. Then, once they did understand the order there was the fact that our German friends have not embraced the "fast" in fast food. They take the order, make the food, deliver it to the customer, all very civilized and orderly like. (I would add probably like we are supposed to eat… )   THEN they greet the next customer and start all over.  Mine were not prepared for that.  The adventures lol.

In between were some bothersome medical tests, because hey, this isn't heaven.  We can always use a reminder and this is the thorn in the side that often does just that. His grace is sufficient though this sort of thing distracts a person, you know?

So that is where I have been.  The pictures are piling up, there is much to show and tell.  Just hasn't been any time. And I need to skedaddle again.  But I will be back.  Even if in snippets.  I hope my American friends are enjoying a marvelous holiday weekend. I look forward to hearing what is happening in your world.

Drop a little note. : )

Fall in Germany

We interrupt this tour of Paris to take a peek around this neck of the woods. I couldn't help myself. We did another Moira and Mom project:

Reuschbach-roofsweb

I love fall best of all. Rainy fall even better.  Call me crazy. I grew up in a climate similar to this and adore the way the overcast sky pops the earthy colors down below and how the misty rain leaves everything emerald green and smelling delicious.

Green-woodpecker-2web

This little green woodpecker (yes?) paid us a visit early morning.  The boys were the first to notice and quickly called me to window.

The neighbors still don't know what to make of me.  There is that American lady in the monster vehicle talking to the sheep again.  Though this time it was Moira hanging out of the passenger side.

If it has peeling paint I probably will be completely unable to pass by. I just can't. I have been known to need a nudge to move on. The textures of this place amaze me.

I visit the calves too.  But we can chat at greater length because they live on the other side of my fence.

The gardens are nearly bare now.  This was the last of the villager's cabbages right before the first frost.

A neighboring village spring.  Seems everyplace has one though they are largely ornamental these days, the old original wells having been capped. I am glad they kept them however.  The one nearest to us has koi swimming inside today.

I promise you Paris by night very soon.

the wild and the wonderful

We will start with the wonderful, the way I like my wildlife – poetically beautiful, poised, serene.  I like serene a lot.  It was with great admiration that I watched this bird of prey who lives behind us.  It was a display of rare cooperation that he sat on the neighbor's shed roof while I changed lenses twice to get him into focus.  I thank you, bird, both for cooperating and then flying away without inspiring terror of any sort.

Hawk-shed-web

Hawk-shed-tree-web

Not all my interaction with local wildlife is as soothing.  You knew it had to happen didn't you?  It came to pass finally that I came face to face with that fearsome beast – the wild boar.  We were driving the other day when I noticed something galloping along the road in the ditch, whereupon I began to shout like a crazed woman wildboarwildboarwildboarwildboar! casually mentioned "Hey, y'all.  Might that be a pleasant little critter of some sort?  Boar perhaps?"  Indeed it was.

DSC_0333

We nearly blocked traffic while waiting for daughter to get the camera and crane her neck over me to snatch a shot.  Its blurry.  But it's undeniable proof.  Wild boar exist.  Right here. With tusks.  And despite Wiki reassurances to the contrary, this purportedly noctural beast was truckin' down the road at FOUR PM.  Why??  Why play with my mind this way, piggie?  Do you not know that I already jump at every crunch of the forest floor certain a boar-ala-Grimm is running headlong to devour my babies? Til now my great consolation was that I was out during daytime, when all respectable wild pigs were fast asleep, far far away.  That illusion is now shattered.  I am left with repeating to myself, "They are more afraid of you, they are more afraid of you."

But I don't believe it.
