Snow Shoe-ing

Jan 2016 snowshoe web (4 of 6)

Ok so when I pictured us and snow shoes I was envisioning tennis rackets like Pa Ingalls wore.  It being about 150 years later and all they handed out aluminum frame models.  In yellow. That made the kids' class look an awful lot like a flock of little ducks as they flapped along down the trail.

This is a winter sport I think I like. It makes hiking a year round option. You walk, you stop, you take pictures.

Highlights of this walk were finding a deer scapula and magpie tracks.

Oh deer

The local nature center was calling the other day.  Actually three little voices were calling me over and over, "Pleeeeease can we go to the deer class?"  So I wrapped up the odds and ends I was working on and we piled in the van. Really, there is no end to work at home.  We should keep plugging away everyday but if you aren't careful whole days can pass without getting out in the fresh air and wild places.  So it was a very good call, except for the very cold part.  It's officially cold now.

This week's class was on mule deer. It began in the education center learning about their senses, antlers, and migration habits.  They discussed carry capacity, which is the number of animals a given habitat can support.  Then they played a hands on games demonstrating the ebb and flow of deer population.

In the middle of the class discussion someone noticed two deer passing just outside the window.  Awesome.

They finshed their classroom work and bundled up to go look for more deer on the trail.

They spotted some tracks in the mud on the banks of the stream.

Up higher looking and….

Can you see them?  It was pretty dark in the little clearing and the phone doesn't play nicely at a distance.

The clouds broke up on the walk back and we saw the sun set on the mountains, now sporting a bit of snowcap.

A Grimm Story

It started out as a small kindly errand.   Little Red set off into the forest….

A pleasant task for a pleasant day…

At her cottage waited dear, sweet Grandmother, feeling a little under the weather.

Unbeknownst to both Grandmother and Little Red, a conniving wolf was shadowing their every move, plotting against them.

When Grandmother answered the door, expecting her young visitor, she was in for quite a shock…

Little Red, however, was none the wiser as she approached the door.

Little Red ran for her life, pursued by the wolf.  Fortunately, the woodsman arrived just in the nick of time and saved the day.

He was quite pleased with himself….

button trees

Oct 2015 sew web (1 of 1)-2

All finished. Our October project with the neighbor girl was button trees. They basted the felt trunk onto the cotton backing and then sewed the buttons on in criss-cross fashion.  The backs are not beautiful. They did not knot and restart each button because the stitching was doable and knots and rethreading was…not.  But hey, for 6, 7, and 8 year olds I was impressed.

To finish we (the me part of we) trimmed and glued the fabric to the inner hoop. This is the same technique you use for framing patterned fabric or tea towels etc. with embroidery hoops.

Flag Work – DIY

Oct 2015 flags web (1 of 4)

Can we make the flag game?

Can we make the flag game?

Hey Mom?  Can we make the flag game today?

Third time's the charm.  We made the flag game today, a very not professional DIY Montessori flag work board set. It consists of a blank map poster glued onto foam board, a poster of world flags (to cut), a box of long pearl head straight pins, and packing tape.

It made for a long work period spent pouring over the atlas and trying to match everything up. I expect we will see quite a lot of it in the days to come.

Columbus Day (or when Dad is out of town)

The weekend has been full of the sort of adventures one can only have when the other parent is out of town.  Some of you know exactly what that entails. : )  You can't always help the amping up but there are ways to help counter it.  I was reading this snippet during a lull the other day.  (I hope it pulls up. If not, or if you are intrigued it is from the much loved Simplicity Parenting book here) Basically he shares some stories of two rather excitable little people and how their very tuned-in mamas helped them not to hide from stimulation but to process it well.

With that in mind, let me begin again.  It was a weekend of adventures with Dad gone,   therefore there has very intentionally been some quieting activity woven in.

We finished up an experiment from Friday.  We sat and did some hand sewing.  (you will love!) Some of us drew along with this tutorial after our Columbus biography read aloud today.  I think my 6yo (below) is a gosh honest art prodigy.  But I digress.

My goal isn't to live in a serene bubble, but to keep a finger on the pulse of this house and its members to balance the physical and emotional debits and credits. Sometimes the sails tip more one way than the other but the ship rights itself in the end.

Columbus

pssssst…

If Monday was insane and you did zero things for Columbus Day the holiday police will not arrest you if you decide to make the Santa Maria tomorrow.   #permissiongranted

Spiritual Preparation of the Teacher – Montessori

While rereading one of my favorite old books (here) I found this gem that went into my commonplace/quote book (housed in 99 cent composition books):

"He must rid his heart of pride and anger. He must learn how to humble himself and be clothed with charity. These are the virtues he must acquire and this inner preparation will give him the balance and poise which he will need…We insist on the fact that a teacher must prepare himself interiorly by systematically studying himself so that he can tear out his most deeply rooted defects, those in fact which impede his relations with children."  - Maria Montessori  The Secret of Childhood

summer thoughts

Jun 2015 summer web (1 of 1)-13

"For most American children summer break is at hand, bringing with it the promise of cloudless, blue skies overhead, sprinklers spraying, and fireflies to chase before bed. There are ball games, freshly cut grass, and leisurely mornings to sleep in.

For their parents it may be a different story…"

Stressed over summer break?  Feel like you should be doing more?  You can jump over here for my take over at Tan Homeschool today.  (hint – if your summer is looking anything like this, I think you're probably doing just fine.)

Rainy May – lots of links – sort of Daybook

Outside:  Rain.  A whole bunch.  It doesn't look much different outside my window today than it did outside my window last year this time.

Listening to: Simon and Garfunkel.  A lot.  Because…Simon and Garfunkel.

Thinking about: "Slow down, you're moving too fast.  Got to make the moment last."  (see above)    Which reminded me a lot of this article about The Sacred Inefficiencies of Life and where productivity sometimes runs right up against being present and connected.

Creating: A beautiful (with luck!) command center for household tasks.  Need some ideas?  I have my favorites pinned here. Will be back to update on which we chose.

Reading:  So much.  First, friends had shared a few weeks ago about Pioneer Girl

It was out of stock at the time and approaching scalper pricing so I put it out of mind for a bit though it was super intriguing.  Then this showed up at my door courtesy of my friend Heather whom we roadtripped with to Bath lo these many years back now.

When they say "annotated" they are not kidding.   There are footnotes of biblical proportions.  Like, for real, there are as many footnotes as lines of story on many pages and surprisingly they are just as interesting as the main text.

Around the house:  Some people are still struggling to recall where stuff goes in the new house.  All the people, actually.  They say it takes three months to form a new habit.  Meantime….

While getting familiar with a new American house is a challenge at times we had to laugh at this tutorial BBC put out on British houses.  Oh I get homesick.

In other news I found the living room curtain panels and they ended up being not quite right since one side of the living room is a bit sunken.  When going through my picture files I found a snap from Hancock Fabrics.  At least I hope that's where it was.  It may have been Joann's which will mean two trips to figure out but either way I am leaning towards something in this family…

From the learning room:  Ok there isn't a learning room per se at the moment, though every day sees it coming together a bit more.  We are still learning, however, and thinking about learning and planning the coming school year's learning.  I have also been thinking with gratitude about my teaching mentors over the years after we read this article from last fall which led to the discovery the US Dept of Ed reported that over the course of one recent school year over 37,000 children were restrained in this way.  This all got me thinking, "What would Marva Collins do?" If you can't answer that then spend the penny on Amazon and be inspired.

Same team, y'all.

We are all on the same team.  : )  On that note I read Janet Lansbury's sample dialogs when facing potential confrontation of wills.  How differently these scenarios can play out.
