Santa Fe Cathedral

Santa Fe has long been a bucket list destination for me.  Literally some 25 years now. From the first time I saw Mary Emmerling mixing chintz and kilim and turquoise and blue willow in her historic adobe home there the idea was planted firmly in my mind. Then, of course, there is Georgia OKeefe. And Willa Cather. And Ansel Adams.  Well dear reader, I got there finally and it did not disappoint.  It was a short visit and my feet were throbbing by the end from trying to cover as much ground as possible.

If you've read Death Comes for the Archbishop (and I have not but am about to) then you may remember the fictionalized account of the Cathedral of Santa Fe.  I thought you might enjoy a peek. We can start here…

A day in Denver

Apr 2018 central market web (9 of 13)

Time with our adult kids is always in short supply so I relish days like this full of coffee and exploration.  They know I appreciate wandering through colorful districts and interesting shops and lined up both.

My kids have such uniquely different personalities and interests that you're pretty much guaranteed a wide variety of outings with this bunch.  Colin will find me coffee and music and vintage anything.  Zach found me awesome street art and we toured the neighborhoods he is showing homes in as a realtor.

We actually had a massive wind storm the afternoon we were downtown so the Central Market lost power for part of it.  Wild day!

A day downtown

Dec 2017 downtown web (7 of 8)

The city is only a half hour or so away but it usually takes company to prompt me to drive in. Colin's visit got me downtown.  We hit a museum first and were a little overconfident about the crowds.  When we moved to the city center we realized that's where the people were all hanging out. Temple Square had their tree lighting that day so we shopped and walked and waited around until after dusk then walked back to the car through the Christmas lights. With thousands of our closest friends lol.

This really launched us into the holiday season.  It was so much nicer to go see the lights this year at 40 degrees than it was the last time at 4 degrees! Just a beautful day all around.

the thing we need most

“Usually, when the distractions of daily life deplete our energy, the first thing we eliminate is the thing we need the most: quiet, reflective time. Time to dream, time to contemplate what's working and what's not, so that we can make changes for the better."

Sabbath day thoughts accompanied by images from a drive into the mountains a couple weeks ago. No doubt the color is even more fiery right now. I wish we were there today!  But we needed a lazy Sunday with naps and list making afternoon even more.  A quiet walk in the neighborhood is planned instead.

Swiss on Sunday

Up for a virtual Sunday drive in the country?  How about we visit Midway, Utah? It's a little bit of Switzerland in the Rockies.  We hope to return for Swiss Days in the fall or the Christmas creche festival. From the folk painted exteriors to the bits of charm throughout town to the horseback riders along the road, it was a breath of fresh air.

It's hard to tell here but we arrived as the clock struck on the hour. The doors opened and the tiny figures spun around as the chimes rang.

Locally grown fun

Jun 2017 festival web (1 of 1)-4

Summertime is festival time locally and the surrounding towns and neighborhoods have been begun their celebrations. The kids have been looking forward to these, especially since they have been working towards their first kids' runs.  We got up bright and early – super unreasonably early lol – and got set up for my husband and Brendan's 5k.  He is getting his time chip attached to his shoe below.

The girls were planning to do the 1mi run.  More like they were chopping at the bit excited about this and have been talking about it for a couple weeks. Which doesn't mean you might not still try to squeeze in one more chapter while waiting.

Brendan kinda blew everyone's minds.  We had told him he would probably be tempted to start fast but that he should follow his dad's pace instead and he did.  For a while.  Then his natural runner instinct kicked in and he ran the way he wanted – right past his dad and the other adult runners to make a solid fifth place overall finish.

The girls were more than ready when their turn came.  It was not to be however.  The other children signed up didn't show, likely due to some last minute race time changes.  To compensate they gave the kids tickets to the carnival later in the day.  Not a bad deal.

We headed over to the little parade which was more of a candy throw.  That suited them fine, especially since their neighbor friend showed up and watched with them.

Travel Diary – Long Beach Waterfront

Apr 2017 long beach pier (5 of 6)

It was late in the day when we got set up at the RV park and then got ourselves over to the waterfront.  Such a beautiful welcome to California though for us landlocked folks.  We walked as far around the little marina area as we could before dark fell then stopped to eat.  This evening was chillier than we had expected but also more colorful.  Such happy bright colors on this trip!

It was a treat for us all around.  We usually don't eat out a lot when traveling so it was a fun splurge to enjoy dinner on the patio of the restaurant.  Our weird funny California newbie story then was that we circled a while for parking when we arrived. Since we didn't know our way around we made another splurge decision and used the waterfront's valet parking.  It was like $10 and we figured that was what a parking garage was going to cost anyway.  When we finished dinner we walked back to the valet pick-up and they cheerfully said we were like third in line.  No problem.  There were heated pavillions to wait in.  We sat ourselves down with a very cool international mix of other folks and waited.

And waited.

And waaaaaaited.

50 minutes all told. Fortunately the views were awesome and the people were interesting. People and places are always interesting to me though. : )

of canyons and emus

Apr 2017 emus web (5 of 5)

The first day of our California trip took us through a bit of Arizona and some….. sparsely populated places. The canyons were incredible, soaring up high above us as we wound our way through.  Also, I should clean the windshield before I take pictures through it.

Apr 2017 emus web (5 of 5)

We stopped for gas at a little hole in the wall place in the middle of nowhere.  In the middle of nowhere, across from a gas station, there is a petting zoo.  At the petting zoo, across from the gas station, there are some emus.  (you were dying to know how this comes together right?) So, none of it made sense but you can be sure I made the mister pull over.

This is him thinking something to the effect of, "She seriously wants to go over across the road to see the emus in the junkyard petting zoo?  Silly question.  Of course she does."

Of course I did!  You've gotta admit they are some of the creepiest semi-domestic creatures ever.  So much attitude.

Working the Bison

Bison18
Bison14

Every year, come fall, they round up the bison on Antelope Island for a week-long process of inspection, medication, and culling. We did not get to the round up this year but had been planning this trip to see them working the herd for weeks.  I was a little concerned when our normally sunny sky forecast called for rain that day but we moved forward with high hopes. When it still wasn't raining when we arrived I was positively giddy.  Giddy still, as I swung that camera strap over my neck and went to adjust the settings on the camera.  Giddy passed quickly when I saw that big "E" on the screen.  Error message.

See, I was rocking this field trip thing.  It was on the calendar way in advance.  The little girls were up early packing lunches.  We got gas.  Camera card was downloaded and bag was packed.  The misstep in there was forgetting to take the memory card back out of the computer.  Insert sharp gasp and dramatic face palm.  Not gonna lie, I almost cried actual tears.  It takes 40 minutes to drive out from here to the island and they do this whole thing in a day or two.

Sooooo, I pulled myself together and pulled out the world's stupidest smartphone.  You'll get the gist anyway.  It's more important to just keep telling the story right?

Bison13

Ok so bison are bovine and technically not buffalo which is apparently the term more correctly applied to the Asian water buffalo family.  Nevertheless they ARE the same critter that roamed the open plains of the wild west.  We've just been using the wrong name all this time.

These bison are part of a large herd that roam the island. In the fall they open up these feeding corrals to entice them in.  When the medical staff and volunteers arrive they begin the sorting process.  A few at a time are moved down the narrowing path towards the chute with this "turkey chaser" tractor.

Bison9

Bison11

Bison6

Bison10

One by one they are shuttled into the chute where the vet scans their chips (microchips, not buffalo chips ; )), assesses breeding status, and administers shots or meds as needed.  This all happens in about 90seconds.  I am not exaggerating.  They actually move them through in less than 2 minutes each.

Bison7 Bison8

If the animal is not pregnant for two consecutive years or is not growing at a good rate or in some other way is not up to par they get routed to these holding pens to be sold.  This year there was a fire started by lightning on the island that took out some 14k acres of grazing area so more stock than usual are being culled to prepare for winter.

Those that make the cut are sent on their way back out to the open range.

Bison5

After watching for a while the children got to handle some artifacts from the ranch and roam around.  Truly one of the best field trips we have done.

Even with a stupid-phone.
