The frequent heavy rains are stripping the trees of their autumn coats and it makes me a little sad that every time the sun peeks out again there are fewer leaves left clinging to the branches.  Every week the boys and their dad gather the strays from the courtyard and the little girls collect fat fistfuls for very fleeting bouquets.

This is my bliss. : )

Another sweet thing – Tess tried on one of the ponchos the big girls and I learned to make when I was on bedrest with Brendan all those years ago.  She loved it.  I love that she does.

trick or treat

The house was aflutter all day with costume making for one and all.  Or most <g>.  There were last minute runs to the craft store and even more last minute costume changes.  In the end everyone was delighted with their creation.  Or most <g>   We didn't have a well-planned Dad costume this year, but you'll see he did pull something together for trick or treating.
This is always a silly family affair.  We tend to make big plans for the following year while we wander the neighborhood with the children.  Without fail we are scrambling the hours before that next holiday anyway.  Still, it is a blast.
I was thinking as we walked tonight of all the angst of Halloween's past.  It was one of those things we didn't think twice about early on, filled as we were with Peanut's style memories of masquerades and jack-o-lanterns from our own childhood. Then we were introduced to the myriad (strong) opinions on the subject as we moved around the country.  To costume or not.  Yes.  No.  Only as saints.  Only at church. And every variation in between.  Some years I did multiples of those things and made saint AND secular costumes.  And nearly lost my mind.   Add to that the new debates about fair trade chocolate and HFCS and you have dilemmas that rank right up there with epidural or no-meds, home or school, and bangs or no bangs in the hierarchy of parental decision making.
I don't envy young parents. There are a lot of things to sort out.  I am not the person to pretend to know what is best for any other family.  For us, though, it was a Peanut's style Halloween complete with plenty of Charlie Brown moments as usual.
The days are rapidly shortening and we had our time change last weekend. (I was on it because the BBC radio man kindly alerted me to "check your timepiece" and we did) All that means it was getting dark when Moira got home from her class at 4ish and it was pitch black by the time we left.  So no Germany style sidewalk pictures this year.  We snapped a few at home before we headed out though.  (and roughly edited to include more less radiator.  Agh they were bugging me)

In this year's Halloween performance credits, Mom's name goes under wardrobe and Moira is listed under makeup artist.  She was brilliant.  And fast.  And the little girls made it all night without their faces running.  Let's hear it for real face paint instead of Mom's makeup bag. <g>  I am always amazed at the difference it makes to have the right stuff.  So much of my life I try to muddle through without and it doesn't always save time or money.

Ok I was really REALLY happy with B's costume.  I am still laughing. The wind blew so hard he lost parts of his beard as we went but still.  He was so darn cute.

Kieran is ten, which means he still wants to trick or treat but he is now old enough to be self-conscious about wanting to trick or treat.  Dressing up as a grown up (Someone pegged him as Jim from The Office ; )) seemed to help him reconcile the whole thing with himself.

Aidan is 13, which means he is old enough to now think its cool to dress up, as long as you dress up in something cool.  Like this. And then perform for your candy.

This was actually a pretty big hit. : )

Moira and have had a big week.  Dinner for 30 on Monday. Yep.  Thirty.  Alannah flew to Germany early Tuesday.  There was a co-op class, several football practices and games, and a trip to a haunted house. There were cookies and cupcakes made, some tiny girl dress up days.

And there were pictures, because the season is changing and so is my daughter. Moira, working diligently through regular schoolwork as well as delving into a worldview class, trying to master the new steps at the new dance studio, and now training for a 10k. Seems like more than ample reason for some spoiling, to celebrate who she is right now. : )

the great pumpkins

"The Great Pumpkin will appear and I'll be waiting for him! I'll be there! I'll be sitting there in that pumpkin patch… and I'll see the Great Pumpkin. Just wait and see, Charlie Brown. I'll see that Great Pumpkin. I'll SEE the Great Pumpkin! Just you wait, Charlie Brown. The Great Pumpkin will appear and I'll be waiting for him…"

Alannah reminded me daily since she first saw the signs go up. When are we going to the pumpkin patch?  We are going to the corn maze right?  Is it this weekend?

Yes.  This is my newly adult daughter. : )  Truthfully we were all anxious to go.

First stop was the Maize Maze, which makes me smile every time I say it.  Maize Maze.  There.  I said it again.

The kids listened intently as the attendent explained that this year the maze was created in the shape of the Olypmic rings.  There were questions in each ring they had to locate and answer.  You can see Brendan was getting a little concerned.

Off they went.  Since the maze was for children 5 and older Abbie and I hung out in the patch.  If I had been thinking ahead to how long it could take to find trivia in a half dozen concentric corn circles I probably would have kept the keys so we could get my purse from the car and buy some candy apples or something.

In lieu of that sort of preplanning I suggested to Abbie that she race through the pumpkins while I took about 5000 pictures of her.  It's ok.  I didn't upload them all.

Pony Ride

Oct-2012-pony-ride-lo-web

I sat down and used some of the templates I have to gather together all the pictures we have taken lately.  I admit to being ambivalent about it.  Scrapbooking was my first photography love.  But I have gotten spoiled seeing the images so large on my screen. It's probably not practical to print them all ginormous however (see me still not completely reconciled to that reality lol) and I am determined to get them printed more regularly.  So I am testing the waters here.

Jury is still out. So I will post both why don't I. There now that I have published and unpublished and republished I feel much better.  : )

At any rate you can click on the image to open it a little larger and see the journaling.  One thing I am wild about is the new software I have been working with. (image at bottom) It is like putting my kids into the pages of a children's book. Now THIS is like two of my favorite worlds coming together.

Thumbs up on that.

Here is a funny.  At least I crack up every time I see the pic of that sign on the straw stacks.  The fine print says to queue up here.  Getting queued up in England is what you do instead of standing in line.  Queued up rhymes with my new favorite British saying 'clued up' which I first heard on a escalator.  The man was asserting to his friend that, "She just isn't 'clued up' about this!"  You can bet I am on the lookout for chances to use this one.  Being as snarky as I am ashamed to admit I can be, I will probably find one.

If you are still reading I send you my hearty appreciation.  I peeled apples for applesauce all day, then we sat in fruh-EEE-zing weather through a football game after dark.  Brr. It's possible my brain hasn't thawed out yet.

There you have it – my ramble for the day.

cleaning up the orchard

 2012 orchard clean 2 web

Sep

We have picked a lot of apples this fall, but since we didn't realize we could until they had begun to fall there were many on the ground too that were rotten.  We learned that these can spread disease to the trees.  Since we have a compostable rubbish bin along with our regular bins we have been gathering the yucky apples and fallen branches as we can.

The children just adore the orchard.  Working in the trees reveals some basic gender differences. The girls reach for apples one at a time, carefully depositing them into their bags.  The boys just LOVE picking up fallen apples.  You can see by the looks on their faces.  I was just amazed at their enthusiasm.  Wanna know why they look so gleeful?

Two at a time were pitching apples from one side of the orchard towards the bin.  Another one would lift the lid just so, creating a backboard of sorts for the apples to slam into.  They were keeping score of how many buckets they made. At least until it looked as though there was a fair possibility of someone getting clocked by flying fruit and I had to put the kibosh on that.

a fall tradition

What a difference a couple weeks makes.  It is the difference between short sleeves and stadium blankets.  Between sunscreen and umbrellas. This is the way of it every autumn.  Early in the season the sun beats down and by the end we are shivering on the sidelines. Rain or shine they are on the field however, a fall tradition in this family for nearly two decades now.

I hope you are playing hard this weekend. What says fall fun in your family?

this abides

"I don't think I got it, Mom.  The sun is right behind the nest."

One hallmark of springtime in the German countryside is the return of the storks to their wheel high on a rooftop in a nearby village. Moira, tasked as she was with snapping the mama stork as we drove 'round the corner, doubted the shot was salvageable.

"Let me look at it in editing.  I might be able to save it," I told her. When I went through them later, one image just caught my breath. Most of the storks we have seen have been pristine, almost regal.  Through the zoom lens, however, this mama appeared a little bedraggled. Tired, but steadfast, serene as she has been every time we have passed lately. She was plucking down from her undersides and dropping it into the nest.

I keep returning to this image.  It stands in start contrast to a world that insists we mothers must reach for our own oxygen masks first.  Perhaps in our quest for self-preservation and fulfillment we have missed what these creatures just know instinctively: It is in giving that we receive.

stork

"'There were in Delft innumerable storks' nests. When the fire broke out, which was on the 3rd of May, the young storks were fledged, but could not yet fly. Seeing the fire approach, the parent storks attempted to carry their young ones out of danger, but they were too heavy; and after having tried all sorts of desperate efforts, the poor birds were forced to give it up. They might have saved themselves by abandoning the little ones to their fate. But instead, they stayed upon their nests, gathered their little ones about them, covered them with their wings as if to retard as long as possible the fatal moment, and so awaited death in that loving and noble attitude.'

Truly this was a remarkable illustration of devotion, and again demonstrates the fact that there is no greater love in the world than mother love. This holds homes together and comforts in distress. This abides when all others fail.'"  – Edmondo De Amicis
