Free-vintage-st-patricks-day-boy-with-flowers-and-large-shamrock
Here it is folks!  I am pleased to be able to offer you a chance to have your own set of the wonderful Speed Math game cards which I reviewed last fall here. Speed is a Montessori-inspired card game which makes learning and practicing the multiplication tables painless. Better than that, it makes it just plain fun.  I can attest that my children ask to play all the time.  Coupled with our Multiplication mat, even our first grader can play.

You can visit Julie's website to see a video of the game in action.

Living and learning lately – Early March edition

Late winter went out with a bang as far as school has gone.  Aidan had the opportunity to attend a co-op class on Celestial Navigation. (Thank you Amy! ) Truth be told, some of it was over his head as he was one of the younger participants.  But fortunately we still have access to the wonderful slide presentations and I have been pulling materials from the shelves to continue the conversation at home. Brendan and Kieran have been fired up about astronomy since overhearing us chat about class so they got some projects too,

We found the Wrap-Up's.  They had been hiding at the bottom of a box I had unpacked and repacked and missed them. They were so excited.  Brendan and Tess were too little use them before we moved. Highly recommend. They last forever.

Lunch for 20 last week.  Brendan wrapped 30 burritos the night before.  Go B! Once he got the hang of it he was a wrappin' fool.  The kids had their first St. Pat's gig earlier in the day and came back here for food and an afternoon at the zipline.  The boys headed out to the woods for a long imaginary adventure and later they all ended back inside for board games.  We know some great kids.

A cut and paste morning for the little Irishmen – and women. : )  From the links here.

I forgot to mention a couple read aloud standout's.

The Boy Who Drew Birds: A Story of John James Audubon

This Audubon bio was fabulous. Really. It packed a lot of information in story form and included actual pages from his journals alongside lovely watercolor illustrations. I think we may try this art extension idea.  More than you could ever do here.

The 39 Apartments of Ludwig Van Beethoven

This was a sorta silly story but I honestly didn't realize he had moved even more than we have. ; )

And I better wrap up here.

Stop by tomorrow for the details on a Luck o' the Irish homeschool giveaway!

The prayer table – 1st week in lent

Lent is upon us and I thought we would share a peek at our little prayer table and how it looks right now.  It sits off to one side of the living room and the little ones gravitate there when I am working nearby in the kitchen.

Feb
I loved Ann Voskamp's idea for Ash Wednesday so we began lent there. We had a good talk about the Our Father prayer and really listening to what we are saying when we pray.  "Forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us."   Which is essentially saying, Dear Lord, please treat me the way I treat others.  It's a prayer with a bit of a catch.  Sigh.

Alongside the bowl of 'dust' is a bible and a bowl which holds strips of paper with relevant verses to look up.  Last week they were all about forgiveness.  We have had lots of discussion about what forgiveness is and isn't.  As in, forgiving an offense does not mean you approve of it.  Forgiveness also does not mean you must remain in close contact with the offender.  Sometimes that would not be wise nor safe. But we must always, really and truly, let it go inside.

Above the table last week was Ann's printable.  Today it was replaced with this illustration of the week's gospel story about the Temptation of Christ.  There are new bible verses: Download Temptation  We have printed some coloring pages and will use some ideas found here and here this week.  (there are obviously more resources on those two link than ANY one family could do.  We will pick one or two this week.)

The big draw?  A new science text for Alannah.  She made a comment about one of the images which got one boy's attention.  They started looking through the book and talking and before you knew it a crowd formed.   ON the table.

When was wasn't studying she was working on some vegetarian dishes for lent.  The spinach mushroom quiche was a huge hit.

This little man learned to divide, much the way the rest of them did – sharing. If there are 12 cookies and 3 friends share them fairly, how many do they each get?

Feb
There you have it.  Cookies and friends and fair shares.

The funny thing about floor work is that it usually isn't just the really little people.  I often turn around and stumble over someone else who just sidled up for company.

These two are inseparable. I mean the two above and the two below who are usually in deep discussion about something every waking moment.

She tries very hard to keep up with Tess and Brendan and they try very hard to include her or to join in on something of hers.

Montessori at Home – Multiplication Manipulative plans

Those of you who were interested in our multiplication mat might want to visit Montessori Print Shop.  Jennifer has graciously shared actual lesson pages from her primary math manual to use with the mat.   These run through a typical multiplication presentation, complete with suggested scripts.

Enjoy!

Yarn Along – the pink hat

Behold, knitting project number two. : ) The hat was actually done but I didn't get around to sharing for last week's yarn along at Ginny's.   I so enjoyed making this little hat although the yarn I used was lighter than called for so the hat was smaller than intended.  That's ok, there are a couple of small heads around here.

 HAT

This was my introduction to circular and double pointed needles.  The circular knitting was a dream.  LOVED that you can get stockinette stitch without purling. No major errors, just a few stitches looser than the rest.  It seems my tension level isn't constant, much like in life…. lol.

The double points went alright but I did that part wrong.  I divided the stitches among all the needles and then began to knit so I kept ending up with too many stitches on one needle. Rebecca explained that part to me afterwards and I think I can do it right next time.

HAT

I am stymied now for the next project. Trying to align pattern difficulty with yarn and needles I own has been impossible.  I think I am going to try to let go of the acrylic yarn stash I have and just find a pattern and the necessary yarn and needles for it.  Way too many hours on the net have not panned out. There is a fine line between thrifty and scrupulous.  A line I sometimes cross.  So someone have mercy and point me towards something small and pretty and simple.  I heard of a yarn shop not too far away and will be finding it next week.

Most of my reading has been aloud lately.  We found a Bill Bennett anthology we haven't seen before and have thoroughly enjoyed the renditions included.  The story about the young married couple and the fountain of youth nearly brought me to tears.  There was also a moving retelling of the Story of Ruth.  I see it got one glowing and one negative review on Amazon fwiw.  I like Michael Hague so it's thumbs up here.

Another big hit was Sadako and the Thousand Paper Cranes.  It is all the more interesting since Sue and I have been working together at Snapshots Around the World this year.  We plan to exchange a box of goodies with their family.  This is the best sort of story stretcher.

Continuing that WWII theme, Aidan just finished The Winged Watchman for school.  We are going to tackle the book report tomorrow.   We also coincidentally rented Sophie Scholl in German last week.  I didn't realize it was subtitled 'til we got home but everyone who watched loved it.  We agreed this story was much better with German actors, having lived here.  I tracked down the book version and hope to hit that soon.

Montessori at Home – Braid Board

braid board

Braid boards can be made fairly easily.  This one is a 1 x 4 with a narrow hole drilled at the top, through which are pulled three shoelaces.  If I was closer to a craft store I would probably redo it with 3 different colored cords.  If the drill wasn't an option you could hot glue or staple the strings to the top just as easily.

From braiding practice you eventually graduate to other knotwork projects like beginner friendship bracelets.   Or, doing your sister's hair. : )
