Santa Fe Cathedral

Apr 2021 santa fe cathedral web-6

Santa Fe has long been a bucket list destination for me.  Literally some 25 years now. From the first time I saw Mary Emmerling mixing chintz and kilim and turquoise and blue willow in her historic adobe home there the idea was planted firmly in my mind. Then, of course, there is Georgia OKeefe. And Willa Cather. And Ansel Adams.  Well dear reader, I got there finally and it did not disappoint.  It was a short visit and my feet were throbbing by the end from trying to cover as much ground as possible.

If you've read Death Comes for the Archbishop (and I have not but am about to) then you may remember the fictionalized account of the Cathedral of Santa Fe.  I thought you might enjoy a peek. We can start here…

“Either a building is part of a place or it is not. Once that kinship is there, time will only make it stronger.”
Willa Cather, Death Comes for the Archbishop

newsies

Our first "official" field trip of the new school year was to the television and radio stations in Salt Lake City.  This ended up being a very cool day.  Even if it involved driving to the city.  And parking there.

Still…..there was the peacock!

and the noon news broadcast…

Can I just say that was a LOT of trust to place in a group of school aged children but they didn't make a peep.

Saw newsie stuff…

And in general had a grand time.   We followed up by getting lunch for our bunch in town. Here's to getting out there!

Swiss on Sunday

Up for a virtual Sunday drive in the country?  How about we visit Midway, Utah? It's a little bit of Switzerland in the Rockies.  We hope to return for Swiss Days in the fall or the Christmas creche festival. From the folk painted exteriors to the bits of charm throughout town to the horseback riders along the road, it was a breath of fresh air.

It's hard to tell here but we arrived as the clock struck on the hour. The doors opened and the tiny figures spun around as the chimes rang.

America the Beautiful – Farmer’s Market

Apr 2016 ice cream web (3 of 7)

Or that time we had ice cream for dinner. They serve some epic ice cream at the roadside market in Mount Vernon, WA.  People stand in lines that trail outside the building and out into the garden. If you ask around 'everyone' knows where to go.  So of course we had to give it a try. It was late afternoon when we arrived at the market. The sun was slowly sinking lower in the sky but the air was still warm and breezy.

We passed the time while waiting visiting with the man in front of us and his little dog.  He turned around, did a quick head count of the dozen-plus of our family and friends, then threw back his head and laughed it was a darn good thing he had gotten in line ahead of us.  Truth! The whole scooping of softball-sized artisan ice cream scoops into hand-wrapped cones fresh from the waffle iron takes time.

Slow food is the best food. It was a perfect way to ease into the evening after a whole day in the sunshine. The kids loaded into the van, full and happy, and most of them promptly drifted off to the oldies playing on the dashboard radio.

Good friends, great day.

Canyonlands Half Marathon 2016

Mar 2016 canyonlands web (3 of 8)

The sun was shining in beautiful Moab, UT last weekend and we were race groupies once again. It was the first time since we moved back and it felt good to be going through the familiar paces: picking up race packets, pinning numbers on, squeezing to the front of the finish line for that high five.  We spent a three day weekend almost entirely outside, soaking in the canyon lands and shooting a crazy number of frames.  I felt very like myself again by the end.

Fall Festival – Ogden Nature Center

Oct 2015 nature center festival web (1 of 11)

…or (Little) Girls' Night Out. We like to take a couple kids at a time out for special fun events that might be more relevant to just them – a particular movie or concert or whatever.  When their daddy was out of town Alannah and I took the little girls to the fall festival at the nature center.  Brendan was on the fence and decided against going in the end.

The nature center is one place that always feels like home to me.  In all our freakishly mobile married life we have never lived in the same place a second time.

Ever.

Never, ever.

I can't really stress enough how different it is to be back in a place you once lived very long ago.  Many things have changed.  The nature center has not. We came every month when the older boys took classes here.  It is something of a comfort to me to be here again.  A rare concrete link to that other life.

On this night there was cotton candy and game playing and wildlife shows until well after dark. Very exciting when you are 8.  Or 48.  : )

some little joy

Cornish door web (1 of 1)

“I'd like to add some beauty to life," said Anne dreamily. "I don't exactly want to make people KNOW more… though I know that IS the noblest ambition… but I'd love to make them have a pleasanter time because of me… to have some little joy or happy thought that would never have existed if I hadn't been born.”

LM Montgomery, Anne's House of Dreams

I am not convinced Anne did not in fact choose the noblest ambition. What could be more noble in the end than strewing little joys along the paths of others?

Sharing a happy thought of mine: Autumn in England, in all her damp and earthy glory.

Sept 2015 state fair web

The little girls daily schedule is very gentle and undercommitted. (thank goodness!) Instead of a fixed list of activities we try to do a 'fun day' on a regular basis. This week we took them to the State Fair. It has been years since our last visit and they have no recall at all.

This was a perfect iconic fair day.  Animals, exhibits, rides, and fair food. Fabulous break for all of us.

How I Spent My Summer Vacation – The Badlands

July 2015 badlands web (4 of 20)

We are back to school officially and I am LOVING it.  Now if I just had about 4 or 5 more hours in every day or if sleep were more optional than it is for me life would be pretty ideal.  As it is, I make notes and compose posts that never see the screen because yeah…. sleep.  Food. Sports.

Since I am this far behind I figured I could just roll all those unpublished summer posts into the ubiquitous back-to-school essay theme this week.  The Badlands trip was incredible.  Temperature and timing came together to make for a perfect visit that started out nicely enough and got better by the hour.

perspective in paperback

July 2015 south dakota lake web (1 of 1)-2

I was going to share geography books and I will.  However you will humor me, please, because I just finished another book that will be right up near the top of my list of books-I-pray-my-daughters-and-close-friends-read.

I just finished.

Sigh.

I had to save those last 20pages for alone time because it was pretty certain to be a big emotional event.  It was. I locked myself in the guest bath until composed enough to reenter society.  Whew.

The book?  Oh yes.  That would help.  It was Mrs. Mike, a semi-biographical novel about a young Irish-American woman who leaves Boston for a Canadian outpost around 1900.  It's a thrifted paperback copy we've had forever and it didn't give me so much as a hint as to how compelling it would end up being all those years it sat on my shelves.  It read like a quick romance, initially, which meant you arrived at the gut-socking parts completely unprepared for the thinking and mourning and thinking some more that you would do.

To me, there are significant similarities to Strangers and Sojourners by Michael O'Brien.  If you've read one and not the other I am telling you now you should.  Pain, strength, and beauty are all illustrated in such a way that it makes you feel braver, more grateful, and less concerned with petty things. You realize, "When little things perspectiare so important, it's because there aren't any big ones."

Sometimes a novel can make you think more deeply about faith and family than a theology volume can.  This was one of those for me. I pray the perspective embeds deeply in my heart.

While in my head I am still vicariously wandering through northern forests and gliding around crystal lakes tonight I'm pulling out pictures of one of the most idyllic places we passed through this summer.  Part of Black Hills National Park.  Breathtaking.
