Long in the Tooth

Float The vet came last week to do Taylor’s ‘float’.  His teeth had become overgrown and he wasn’t processing his feed well.  We got some pics and I am including Alannah’s narration of the big event. And let me just say if you have never seen a doped up horse it was quite a sight. Like one of those cartoons where the horse accidentally drinks the moonshine or something. Poor guy was weaving and swaying.  In all he really wasn’t uncomfortable though. Not unduly uncomfortable anyway – more just annoyed.

On Friday morning the vet came to float Taylor’s teeth. A float is when the vet straightens a horse’s teeth. Taylor needed this because his teeth were curvy and caused him to lose a lot of his food.

The first thing the vet did was give Taylor a sedative shot. The shot made him very sleepy and wobbly.  Then he made me get a crutch and hold it under Taylor’s head to keep it up.  After that he got a halter with a flat metal that covered his teeth.  Then he cranked his mouth open. He got his tools and began to file Taylor’s teeth down.It looked like it hurt him a lot.  Then he showed us what he did. Taylor’s teeth looked much better.

The float was important because we didn’t want Taylor to starve to death. Now that he is done we can expect him to fatten up.  I didn’t realize it was so dangerous, but now I know more about it.

  1. Drugged horses are hilarious, aren’t they? My sister’s poor horse Silver had to have an operation and he was so funny while he was getting sleepy. Though in hind sight, it was probably funnier to me than her, as it wasn’t my horse!

  2. The boys and I got a chance to see it when we visited a fellow homeschooler’s horse farm early this year. The boys had a great time…poor horses didn’t look like they were having too much fun though. smile
Kim, I’m trying to find your post(s) on lapbooking. I see the photos but I think I remember you posting about it too, with helpful links?
Quinn isn’t capable of doing any “school” work yet so I’m thinking of putting together a series of lapbooks for him. I want the first one to cover Montessori life skills/personal hygiene suggestions with photos of him washing his hands and brushing his teeth. Sort of an “I Can Do It” type book that will also work nicely for our annual review. smile The 2nd one will be along the lines of Charlotte Mason’s Nature Journaling only I’ll incorporate religion and we’ll make a Creation Lapbook. I’m hoping that he will enjoy them (I had to figure out a way to make them sturdy enough for his use) since he didn’t like the Autumn Theme Unit I had planned for him at all! Wouldn’t color a single picture for me! smile He does love posing for the camera so hopefully this is going to work. Praying that it does…I’m running out of ideas. LOL
