Big Brother

I am behind on my personal correspondence and wanted to share one of the main reasons. We discovered over the weekend that a huge multi-state utility project is in the works. As it turns out, it is projected to roll right dead center through Starry Sky. I am not sure what the odds are with the thousand miles involved they end up RIGHT here? But as of now we are facing the very real possibility of our ranch being de-faced and everything we have been building for the past 4 yrs devastated. If we cannot stop nor re-route this project we will be forced to pack up the children and livestock and try to start over – likely minus the money that goes to the mortgage here.

Let me tell you, that prospect is a lot more romantic within the covers of the Little House books than it is in real life. In real life you think of things like life savings, the logistics of moving ten people, and assuring handicapped accessibility.  Your algebra lessons are punctuated by phone calls to lawyers. You try to get up to speed on eminent domain while nursing a sleepless baby.  You may even wonder what terrible thing you did to make God so darn angry with you.  Then you remember.

You remember that every time a new baby has come so has a raise. You remember that every closed door has come with an open window. You remember that God has lots of promises about things like His children never begging bread and His plans to bless and not to curse you. You remember that ‘faith is evidence of things unseen’.  And, even though you CAN’T see a good way out of this one, you just know, somehow, it’s gonna be all right.

We are holding on to that thought right now and we welcome your prayers as we face the upcoming battle.

  1. Stand strong! God has not brought you this far just to leave you hanging. He is in the midst of all of our circumstances – whether they are good or bad. I will be praying for you guys.

  2. Our prayers are with you, Kim! We will keep on storming heaven for you.
Out here some people are facing eminent domain but because of “land preservation”…but it is hurting many landowners and the legality of it is being challenged.
I know of people that placed blessed rocks (yep, it is a sacramental) in the corners of their property…couldn’t hurt ;o)
    Rest assured…we are praying!!

  3. is this the toll road? We have been actively fighting it as well, some of my family have homes in the path as well….will pray that all is well and you have peace!

  4. We’ll be praying for you! God always has a plan beyond our comprehension. It’s encouraging to read about the fact that everytime a baby has come, so has a raise. Only 10 more weeks…or less. Looking at our cicumstances, it appears foolish to let God be in control of the size of our family. However, we know we’re being obedient to Him and know He will provide. Also wanted to mention a service we’re going to utilize. It’s called Prepaid Legal. It originated in my hometown, but in CO Springs, I saw it everywhere, too. You pay a monthly fee (different plans and states have different rates, but they’re between $15-25/mo.) sort of like health insurance. Then, you can get a provider lawyer to send letters, make phone calls or ask info. Their website is: Prepaidlegal.com. Our rep. has been really helpful. If you end up wanting info. from a live person, just let me know and I’ll send you his info.

  5. Kim, our prayers are with you and your family. I pray that the government doesn’t take some of your property. We had a big eminent domain fiasco here, not too long ago. The government took a bunch of houses and then found that they did not have the money to carry out their intended project.

  6. Oh, Kim, I am so sorry. What is the utility company planning to do? If it’s an underground cable or water pipe, maybe it won’t be so bad … Best wishes and hang in there!

  7. So sorry to hear about that, Kim.
You mentioned handicapped access – if one of your family members has special needs, perhaps you could do something through the American with Disabilities Act – if you show that a highway through your property would cause detrimental health effects? Maybe they’d at least have to buy you out then.
    Keep us posted!
