Homeschoolers threaten cultural comfort…

So says Sonny Scott, not a homeschooler himself, but one who has put forth an opinion about why homeschoolers are so darn annoying to the general population. About homeschoolers he says:

Those families are willing to render unto Caesar the things that Caesar’s be, but they draw the line at their children.

  1. Hmm..that was interesting..the article didn’t end up going where I thought it was. Mighty interesting–I think this line sums it up:
“Methinks American middle-class people are uncomfortable around the home schooled for the same reason the alcoholic is uneasy around the teetotaler.”

  2. When I was teaching, it always amazed me how much responsibility parents expected the teachers and school admin to take on! Their kids were more our responsibility then theirs! That experience has made me consider homeschooling (if not for our two room rural school! I don’t know what I’ll do for high school!).

  3. Oh for crying out loud. Maybe people are uncomfortable because we know we are being judged for not homeschooling — you notice that Mr. Scott automatically knows that mothers who work are doing so in order to have the big house, super fancy wedding, etc. No one working just for health insurance in his world!
I myself have homeschooled, but even then I was put off by how defensive some of the moms in our group were. The email list was full of how homeschooled children are better in every way. Our field trip coordinator would let loose on anyone who wanted to impose an age range on a group with how “homeschooled children are always at least a grade level ahead.” If the general population keeps hearing that, well then, yes, they might be annoyed. I know that not everyone does this; I think that perhaps since homeschooling is not as accepted or established as “regular” school, some homeschoolers are zealously defensive. And that gets annoying to people who have made other choices.
