Simple, not easy

That is my motto. That is my life.

I picked up the current issue of Mother Earth News last night and it is wonderful. One article featured Scott and Helen Nearing’s Good Life foundation. When exploring the site I found this quote:

The good life is never stable, never secure, never easy and never ended. It is a series of steps or stages, one leading into the other and all, in their outcome, adding, not subtracting; augmenting, not diminishing; building, not destroying; creating, not annihilating.’–Scott Nearing, 1965

  1. I agree totally with “simple, yes; easy, no.” I’ve read some of Nearing’s stuff (including Living the Good Life or whatever that first book was called). I’ve always been intrigued and have admired them. Just this year I read Meanwhile, Next Door to the Good Life by Jean Hay Bright. She lived by the Nearings (was invited by them to live there, and was part of their little community group). This book gives a bit of another side of the story, but the author did very much love and admire the Nearings, too. It just doesn’t seem to be as ideal as the picture has been painted. Things weren’t always done the way they were reported to have been done by the Nearings. Definitely interesting!
But your main point is about simple not being easy (sorry to digress), and it’s a good one! πŸ™‚
