Just some random glimpses of learning lately. Some favorite things this fall have been drawing from how to books like Draw Write Now, some of which we are also using for our continent studies. They have gone through a fair amount of origami paper. The littles have a much better handle on the world map.
We did a little Catholic feast day cooking. Just a little. A birthday cake for Our Lady. Some cookies for St Rose of Lima. We tried some marshmallow fudge molded into roses for St Therese. That didn't turn out so hot. You win some, you lose some.
The lagoon notebook page below is from Kieran's geography. Kieran loves the geography book I shared in this post. We actually use a workbook as well. A both/and approach this year. He is using techniques from the Drawing With Children book and I think the pages are really bold and fun.

Thank you for posting this. The A to Z book looks really interesting. I’ll have to see if my library has it. Also reminded me to get out our puzzle. We have the very same one.
This is so lovely. I’m curious how you teach/use Drawing with Children. I have it and had hoped to implement but wasn’t with my 5 kids 8 and under, and a friend suggested Drawing Textbook as it is written directly to the student. Its great and my kids love it, but there are things it doesn’t do that Drawing with Children does teach. I know she says you can apply the lessons to any object/subject. We have Geography A to Z and had started a similar book of landforms. I need to get back to it!
Hope that isn’t too long a question! I’ve always been inspired by your practical wisdom and inspiration. Also, if you don’t mind, what is the text in the picture with the tracing of the blackline map?
I have had the Drawing With Children book since our early homeschooling days. I remember pulling it out with Moira a good half dozen yrs back when she made some nice work. And then not again for some time. Kieran and Tess seem to have the skill she encourages to break down an image into idividual parts to reproduce. Both can reproduce with fairly good proportions. So for them its a good fit. Many other how to bks use a similar approach and build up an image from a core shape much like she begins a parrot with a beak.
Kieran is applying that to the Geog. A-Z and starting each drawing by looking at the edges to see where the horizon sits and where from there other elements fall. He is using a thick marker to go over his lines and then filling in with a heavy layer of wax crayon. DwC has them use marker. Both are different techniques for us. It’s good to move outside your comfort zone. : )
