iced oatmeal cookies

 web

Alannah makes quite possibly the very best oatmeal cookie known to man.

Mankind.

Like, perhaps, in the entire universe.

We thought we'd share. : )

1c. butter

1c. brown sugar

1c. white sugar

2 eggs

1 tsp vanilla

1/2 tsp salt

1 tsp soda

1 1/2c. flour

1/2 c. nuts

3c. oats

Combine all ingredients and bake at 350 degrees. This recipe comes from our hometown church cookbook circa the mid-80's.  That's all it gives by way of directions.  Alannah's comments were just as helpful…  "I bake them until I think they are done."

See now, when I do that, disaster is sure to follow. Too gooey. Too crisp. Too burnt. I don't think like a cookie apparently. Just a side note.

They spread.  Just so you know. When they are done and starting to cool you ice them.

6T butter, melted

1 1/2c powdered sugar

1-3tsp water

stir the above and slap it on. It cools to a nice glossy semi-hard icing.

Our summer grown up project is cooking new things so I will probably be talking food as time goes by. I might let Alannah talk cookies though.  It's her language.

  1. Definitely making these!
I, too, am a cookie person. I love to make cookies, and find them so very easy – I must think like a cookie. Other things, not so much – I make cakes for birthdays, but I’m never ever satisfied with how they come our. It’s interesting, because my mom was not a cookie person. She rarely made them other than at Christmas time, and even then only a select few. She was a pie lady. I kind of envy that sometimes, but being a cookie gal has been very great for me here in Japan. Baking cookies is not a big thing here, so I find that a gift of cookies is so very appreciated. It’s kind of my love language with Japanese friends in my life. They think I’m amazing for making cookies. I tell them that it’s so much easier than it looks, but they don’t believe me. I’m OK with that. 😉

  2. Alannah? About the oats….Quick or Old Fashioned? I’m staring intently and looking at the texture I’m thinking Quick. Actually, I stared long enough that I’ve gained three pounds. 🙂
Its almost father’s day and my dad loves cookies — and he’s 82 –He can have all the cookies he wants. I think he’ll like these!

  3. Oatmeal is my favorite cookie. Yum.
Alannah, my son is allergic to nuts. Could I leave them out with the same results?
PS if you added 1/2 to 1 t ginger to your icing I’m guessing the boys would love it…not for the littles though. I’m going to try it. 😉

  4. mdoe37: Yep, they are quick oats. Although, they come out great with either. I just use whatever we have in the house. 🙂

  5. barbara: I don’t normally add the nuts due to not having them readily available and they come out perfectly! We tend to alter many of our recipes due to allergies and what ingredients we have readily available anyways. For instance, these have no vanilla (the frosting does though) or nuts and have all white sugar instead of brown. 🙂 I’ve learned that they taste great no matter what. 🙂 Enjoy!
